Has ANYBODY else had this problem on their Macbook's around this year? Also, what would the best way to try and get compensated for this be? I have tried Customer Relations once, but he didn't seem to budge. All anybody from Apple can say is 'Should have got Apple Care', which I find iggnorant. I feel like I've been cheated by Apple, and a $2400 computer shouldn't need a $600 repair not even two years later. They did a hardware test, and even though the logic board appeared to be fine on all of the tests they did, the guy there said that he's 100% sure that it was. I went into the Apple store to diagnosis it.
It was only nine months out of warranty, and costed me around $2400 at the time of purchase (high end 15' model). The procedure is same for both 15” and 17” MacBook Pro machines. Install the new upgraded board if it comes with heatsink and follow all the steps in reverse order. Pull up the board from the dvd drive side and remove the DC in cable. Then remove 8-10 screws securing the logic board. Then disconnect battery, lcd connector, all the cables like speakers, keyboard, trackpad, backlight, dvd drive, battery indicator, wifi and camera. Logic board replacement or upgrade can be easily done by opening the bottom 10 screws after disconnecting the power. There is a known issue with this board so changing it with an upgraded board or installing a new chip will not work in the long run. Some think that putting a new cpu will fix the gpu issue but it is not true. Most people think that upgrading the logic board will fix the graphics problem. This model a1286 both in 15” and 17” have gpu issues. 2011 15 and 17 inch logic board upgrade means changing the board with another working board or upgrading to a faster CPU.
